Brief Format

1. The entire citation must appear on each piece of evidence (Author, qualification, date, publication, page number). The specific format is explained in "Evidence Citation."

2. The citation must be typed on each piece of evidence, including hardcopy sources. The easiest way to do this is to use computer generated copies of cites; this can be done on GreenPrint.

3. At the end of each citation for each card should be the name of the person who cut the card. Place your name in brackets
[ ] which are set off at the end of the cite.

4. Argument labels (also called tags) must be typed or neatly printed. Hand written labels should be in black ink; otherwise, they may not photocopy well. Labels should be full words except where the case or argument repeatedly uses a widely recognized abbreviation. Otherwise, DO NOT ABBREVIATE OR USE SYMBOLS. Take time and care to write good debate labels. See "Argument Labels."

5. The upper left corner of the brief should note the following information:

6. The top center of the page should contain a label which explains the particular argument. For example, if the main argument (in the upper left corner) is a disadvantage, then there should be sections which are labeled in the top center as “shell,” "link extensions", "uniqueness answers,""impact extensions," etc. If possible, number these sections next to the title at the top.

7. For each argument, brief a frontline and extensions. With a DA it would be the ‘shell” and extensions. Try to do that with all arguments: affirmative answers to arguments, topicality, negative case arguments, kritiks, etc. While you should generally conserve paper by putting several arguments and cards on each page, for frontlines it is acceptable to brief one argument and card per page so as to allow flexibility and easy substitution.

8. Make an index for the set of briefs. Number the pages in the bottom right corner of the page.

9. If possible, when you brief frontlines and extensions, put the extension page numbers next to the argument on the frontline. This will save a step in finding the extensions and make in-round use easier.

10. Use white typing paper for the final arguments -- not colored or lined paper.

11. Leave at least a 1/4 inch margin all around the page. This is essential to the photocopying process.

12. Tape the ENTIRETY of BOTH SIDES of hardcopy evidence on briefs; this includes the citation. This is essential to the photocopying process.

13. For electronic briefing:
A. Use Times New Roman Font
B. Leave at least a one inch margin to the left and right of the page
C. Tags/label should be in either 12 or 14 bold font
D. Leave at least one line between the tag/label and the card citation.
E. The card citation should be in 12 font.
F. The card should be in 10 font.
G. Do not reduce the font of the un-underlined part of the card unless it is necessary to fit the card on a page, and then never reduce the font below 8.
H. Leave at least three lines between the end of a card and the next tag/label.
